Sandyhills Beach and Bay at Risk

Sandyhills is one of the finest, long renowned, unspoilt beaches and natural environments in Dumfries & Galloway, offering open access to all - right in the heart of the East Stewartry Coast National Scenic Area.

A jewel in Scotland’s coastal crown.

There is a proposed vast expansion of Sandyhills Bay Caravan Park from 34 to 155 residential units to be located right along the length of the bay and its foreshore. It would be inconsistent and non-compliant with D&G’s approved Local Development Plan and its related Management Strategy.

It would impact the area in many damaging and irreversible ways including:

•  Loss of nationally and internationally renowned vistas

•  Loss of coastline’s natural habitat and biodiversity

•  Potential for 500+ “gated community” residents

•  Impaired public access and overnight “SW300” stopovers

•  Increase in 24/7 noise and light pollution

•  No net contribution to local amenities and utilities

•  Negligible socio-economic gains for district

Entirely indefensible commercial exploitation

Protect Sandyhills Beach and Bay

Welcome

Save Sandyhills

There is a commercial development proposal currently in the planning system at Dumfries & Galloway Council, from Gillespie Leisure Ltd  the owners of Sandyhills Bay Caravan Park. It is not a formal planning application yet, but is in its enquiry stage, to put in 20 lodges, 74 new caravans and 29 pods spread along the whole sweep/stretch of the bay from one end of it to the other.   The beach will go from having 34 caravans and pods to 155 units. This would severely impact our beautiful unspoilt beach, sand dunes, and woodland. With the increased numbers of buildings, roads, people and cars the pressure on the environment will be huge and irreversible.

The visual impact of such a development in the heart of the designated East Stewartry Coast National Scenic Area (NSA) will be immense.

All you will see as you approach Sandyhills by road, and when you look back from the beach will be caravans, lodges and pods.  Sandyhills is one of the finest, unspoilt beaches in Dumfries & Galloway and currently offers open access to all.

This  website has been commissioned by local residents of Sandyhills to keep everyone who loves Sandyhills up to date with the progress of the application and to notify when formal objections need to be submitted to the Council along with time scales.  You can also stay up to date by joining our Facebook page or find us on Instagram.   We would be grateful if you can spread the word far and wide and get others to follow progress too.

Sandyhills Beach right now needs your help.

Thank you.
